Online Reputation Management with Social MediaAs we continuously plough in to the digital world, there are several issues that we need to take seriously; one of those is the understanding of reputation whilst dealing with social media. Prior to jumping to the deep end of the subject many would agree that it’s best to characterise the term social media for readers that are not that familiar with it.

Social media in its wider sense can be defined as a group of internet based Information Systems/applications which its existence and success depends on user participation and user generated content on the social environment (mainly blogs, forums, and wikis). These user generated content are text, audio, video or other multimedia which are mainly published on social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter, or LinkedIn. Others include social bookmarking sites such as Del.icio.us, or social news sites such as Digg.com.

Now that we have got that out of the way I’ll put the focus back on the subject. Every day we leave digital footprints of ourselves which is never deleted, at the same time it makes it easily accessible globally at any given period of time. Hence it is vital that we consider the issue of reputation whether you are an individual or a business owner.

Apart from us there are also other parties that contribute to our digital footprints, one obvious example that puts it in context would be if you own a business (e.g. a restaurant) then your customers are bound to talk about your business (service, food, staff, hygiene, etc) on social media as a whole. This means that whenever your business is being searched on the internet, the discussions that have been taking place about your business will come up as well.

The discussions that take place always give your business publicity whether it’s good or bad, as the saying goes “All Publicity is Good Publicity” but it’s only subject to how you or your business deals with it to turn it to your advantage. It is for this reason that it is a necessity that your business needs its’ presence on social media; if you don’t have a say or control, then the opportunity is wide open for others to control your reputation online, allowing them to have a say about your business.

In the case of individual reputation it is the same if you are an expert in any particular field (others might discuss about you or your idea/work). However it is mostly about your actions and digital foot print that you leave on social media. These are your status updates, videos, photos you upload on social sites, and comments that you leave behind. Employers these days search the internet for your digital footprint, if they find anything unprofessional (photos, videos, comments) then chances are, they will lose interest in you. You never know the opportunities that tomorrow might present to you, always be ready for it.

One highly important factor you need to consider at the moment is your Facebook and twitter accounts. Recently Facebook have changed their privacy policy allowing Google to index everything about your profile. To add to your surprise Google has also started integrating real time results from twitter, and many other social networking sites. This also means that others can view your facebook profile even if they are not friends with you, so be advised to configure your privacy settings, and think about what you post on your profile.

If you are in business, it is important that you divide your business and personal social profile. A basic advice is if have a Facebook account, and find yourself in a situation that you have your personal and business under one profile which is too late to separate, then I suggest that you categorise your friends list. This could be done by family, by high school friends, by university friends, and by business friends. This way you can have much more organised control of your profile by customising what each friend list or even each friend sees on your photo albums, videos, and status updates.

Now that we are aware of the necessity of reputation on social media, how do we go about addressing the issue? First on the list comes scanning, which is all about listening to what people say about you or your business so that you can be able to asses at what stage your reputation is?

 Setup Google alerts on your name and your business
 Bespoke dashboard, Google blog search via RSS reader
 You can also use socialmention.com for real time search, analysis & social media alerts for monitoring your company or your own name

Second comes planning, which is all about determining the type of social media you are going to use for which purpose, which also requires determining who you are networking with? Addressing this only requires simple logic; whilst finding a solution to a problem on the digital world it is always a good idea to look at things from the perspective of the real word as it is all comes down to human behaviour. For instance when you go to a party, you do not just go and stand over the wall, or even jump on the table and shout to everyone to look at you. This doesn’t need much explanation as it is common knowledge. The first thing we do is assess the crowd, and then off course all of us have got our own way of getting through the night. It is the same on social media; take time to look and assess which group/community you want to network with.

Third inline is consistency, often people think that social media campaign is like an advertisement campaign which has a start and end date. That is completely wrong, social media marketing is long term, consistency and sustainability are the major elements of it! Therefore it is essential that you allocate more than one individual who are passionate about social media that look after your marketing campaign. Your business needs multitude of voices to communicate with clients who will carry on in a sustained manner.

Finally the most important issue and the core of online reputation with social media is dealing with emergency negative media/image about your brand or you as an individual. Do not respond automatically, and emotionally, as visitors will come and see your anger. This will do more damage; people may have got a genuine problem with your service or making a credible point from a different angle when they are leaving a negative media/image. Take time out and give a measured and balanced response. All of this will be done publically so make use of the opportunity for good publicity. Always remember that we cannot control what happens to us, but what we can control is how we react to it. If your response is good then your reputation will not be related with you as an individual/your company making a mistake, but be related with the way you deal with the mistake or the argument you are making. Sometimes it might be that best response will be no response, however sometimes depending on the nature of the negative media/image you might come across tough times which might require of you dealing with it legally.

To conclude I cannot stress enough the need for vigilance. Always be on the watch as the internet constantly changes, things are much easier to correct whilst they are still immature.

“It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it” Benjamin Franklin

Tesco clubcard app for the iphoneTesco-isation might not sound nice or please everyone as it has a negative effect on local businesses, and they continue to expand without limit. Nonetheless there are many sides that need to be appreciated, and much to be learnt from the company with regards to the way they conduct their business.  Tesco have been able to dominate the market because of their clever business model, starting from creating a good circle of virtue filled with tricky incentives.

Their online store is by itself a huge success together with efficient and effective use of their Information Systems which much of their success depends on. Now adding to the fire they have launched an app for the iphone which acts as a substitute for the plastic clubcard (Tesco loyalty card). They have also plans to introduce similar apps for other phones such as the Blackberry and Nokia.

Now where does all this innovativeness turn in to tangible or intangible gains? Previously the clubcard has hugely contributed to the CRM software of Tesco allowing them to slice and dice the data that they compile. Most Tesco shoppers I have personally come across think that the clubcard is only there to reward them with 1 point for every 1 pound spent in store. Now that is true! but what they don’t know is that they are giving Tesco that vital piece of information about their spending/shopping habits at Tesco.

One way or the other clubcard owners are contributing for the success of the company allowing management to make highly knowledgeable decisions at strategical and operational levels. The clubcard also comes in handy for customers while they do their shopping online as it keeps a record of all the items purchased in the past. This eliminates the need to browse the whole online store looking for the items you regularly buy.

Now what extra benefit does the app (clubcard for iphone) bring to the equation? Apart from the obvious benefits such as saving sending out plastic cards, Tesco will be able to accurately know how many, and which of their customers own an iphone, a Blackberry, and a Nokia. Now, you might be thinking what is the use of that? With the company expanding into the telecoms industry, this gives them the chance of monetising on existing customers.

For instance I have installed the app, Tesco already know that I own an iphone and I have auto-magically become a lead on my own action. How brilliant is that? no annoying questionnaires or surveys to obtain this valuable information. This makes their future marketing campaigns easier and successful as it is more targeted and can initiate a call to action which probably makes me a converted lead in the near future. Who knows what type of offer they might throw at me sooner or later?

Everybody is a winner as they are using a clever inbound marketing technique which relies on permission not interruption by giving away a small app, this way they have a very low cost per lead which allows them to get higher ROI (return on investment). Clever Tesco or Clever Marketing?

This is not a job advertisement, I hope that it caught your attention but there is a reasoning behind the title when you read through. From all the birthday gifts I got so far, there is one that tops my list. This year I had received a very special gift from a very special person in my life, and this gift has unquestionably enriched my life immensely. The gift is a book titled “Wanted: How to become the most wanted employee around” this book doesn’t only help you to become the most wanted employee around, but is more of uplifting, motivational, and is packed full of wisdom, which is why I recommend it to everyone. As you dip through the 50 short chapters every thing makes absolute sense and you have no choice but to comprehend with what the author (David Freemantle) is talking about!

Staying on the ball though, one chapter that I find highly relevant to this article is “Be Extra Curricular” in this chapter the author mentions that “95% of learning occurs outside the classroom” he also stresses to “create your own study plan to improve your current on-job performance and to further your career. Educate your self with daily study modules.”

Whilst my endeavor to make a successful career with my previous qualification in BSc Information Systems (Internet Business) I took the advice of the author (David Freemantle) and thought I am more likely to be wanted if I go a bit out of my way to learn about Inbound Marketing. Hence I started to look for blogs and other learning materials on the internet when I came across Inbound Marketing University. I signed up for the course, downloaded all the Webinar Classes on to my iphone, and the accessories of the iphone enabled me to listen to the Webinars through the car speakers whilst my drive to and from work. I didn’t even mind the traffic one bit as I enjoyed all the Webinars given by the industry gurus. Finally I took the Exam and now I am a Certified Professional in Inbound Marketing, and my intellectual ability has expanded as a result of this course.

For this I have to say many thanks and give huge credit for everyone who contributed to the setting up and running of Inbound Marketing University.

The topics that were covered on the course include:

  • How to Blog Effectively for Business
  • SEO Crash Course to Get Found
  • Social Media and Building Community
  • Successful Business Uses for Facebook and Linkedin
  • Viral Marketing and World Wide Raves
  • Advanced SEO Tactics: On Beyond Keyword Research
  • Calls to Action and Landing Page Best Practices
  • Inbound Lead Nurturing
  • Successful Email Marketing
  • Analysing Inbound Marketing
  • PR for Inbound Marketing
  • Twitter for Business
  • Advanced Marketing Analytics
  • Passion Inspired Video & Other Creative Content

To conclude I would like to highlight the need for you to gain extra skills whether you are in or out of work, or even if you are starting to carve your professional career as a graduate. The key is to have a comprehensive knowledge around your field, the way to achieve this is to follow blogs that add value to you and your profession, attend seminars, webinars, forums, and exhibitions. This type of unstructured learning will help you give control as you will be taking a more subjective approach. Get the book “Wanted: How to become the most wanted employee around” you will start to see results, and your life will be enriched if you act accordingly.

As for me the next step in gaining extra skills is to join Google Advertising Professionals Program, which includes Google Analytics Individual Qualification, Google Advertising Fundamentals, and Google Adwords Professional Certification.

Whilst talking about internet safety there are different types of categories, the aim of this article is to highlight the important points on staying safe with the individuals you meet whilst networking with them. On my next article I will be writing an interesting article on online reputation management which will be both applicable for individuals as well as businesses.

When it comes to internet safety, a large amount of focus has been placed on teenagers and the use of social networking websites.  Although it is important for teenagers to be careful when using these popular websites, they are not the only ones who should be concerned with their safety.  If you are an adult, who enjoys networking online, you should also be cautious when it comes to meeting and communicating with other internet users.

Although social networking websites are a great place to meet other internet users, especially ones with interests that are similar to yours, they can also be dangerous.  In recent years, there have been numerous reports of instances when individuals were harmed when they went to meet an individual that they met on an online social network, which includes dating websites.  If you are not careful and cautious, the same thing could happen to you.  This does not mean that you should be filled with fear; however, it does mean that you need to be cautious online.

One of the many ways that you can protect yourself, when it comes to using online social networking websites, is by watching what you post online, particularly in your profile. You may not know this, but a large number of networking sites, including Facebook, MySpace, FriendFinder, and Yahoo! 360 allow all internet users to see your profile or profile page. These internet users do not necessarily have to be a member of your online community unless you have configured your privacy settings. Not only this but I have also noticed even my friends using my computer and leaving their accounts not logged out, they might be safe for the moment as I’ll be able to log them out. Nonetheless it is not possible to expect the same outcome if you do the same in an internet café. This means that although your networking community may be safe, there are still unsavory individuals out there who could easily obtain your personal information.

In addition to the information that you make available to other internet users, including member profiles, you are advised to be cautious when making contact with other internet users, especially those that contact you.  A large number of social networking websites have open memberships. Essentially, this means that anyone can easily join and become a member.  Just because someone says they are who they are doesn’t necessarily mean that they are telling the truth. If at any point during your conversations you feel that you are speaking with someone who is making you feel comfortable or not telling the truth, so please be advised to end your conversation.

For many individuals it is enough to chat with others online, but for some it is not enough. Whether you are asked to meet with an online friend or if you initiated the meeting yourself, you are advised to be cautious.  You will not want to meet with an individual who you have only known online for a short period of time.  For safety reasons, it is advised that you speak with one of your online friends at least a month before agreeing to meet with them. If and when that meeting does take place, you are urged to have it in a public place. Tell a member of family or friend about the details of the rendezvous point.  That way if your meeting does not go as well as you had originally planned, you will be able to ensure your safety by having others around you.

The above mentioned precautionary measures are just a few of the many that you should take. Although you may be worried about hurting someone’s feelings or losing an online friend, you shouldn’t be. Your safety is far too important to be concerned with what others will be thinking or feeling.

After the rather lackluster launch of Windows Vista, Microsoft is ready with another operating system that could succeed Windows XP in the true sense. While Windows Vista offered a flashy new interface, it failed to create a stir in the market due to its poor performance, compatibility goof ups and the lack of any impressive features. The new Windows 7 operating system, which is set to be launched on October 22, 2009, has been designed to fix the old and new annoying features of its immediate predecessor and the older versions.

Although impressive design has never been Microsoft’s strength, the company has managed to improve tremendously on this aspect in the Windows 7 operating system. While users might take a while to get accustomed to the new Taskbar and Aero Peek of Windows 7, they will be pleased with the changes and the ease of use of this OS.

Windows 7 Operating System: What Has Been Discarded?
There are several capabilities and programs that were a part of Windows Vista are no longer present in Windows 7 versions. Some of the discarded items from a long list are:
Quick Launch: This feature had been the trademark of Windows XP and enabled a one-click access to programs. You could add any program to Quick Launch by dragging its icon to the Quick Launch toolbar. This distinctive feature has been eliminated from the Windows 7 versions.
Troubleshooting Warnings: Windows 7 has got rid of the onslaught of word-balloon warnings related to troubleshooting issues and potential security problems.

Windows 7 Beta: What’s New or Improved?
Some of the new or improved features of the Windows 7 operating system are:
Taskbar: The Taskbar is unique to Windows and offers the Windows experience mainly through the Start menu and System Tray. While the Start menu got a much needed redesign in Vista, in Windows 7, the System Tray and the entire Taskbar get a complete makeover.
• The old small icons and text labels that appear for applications currently running on the system are replaced by larger, unlabeled icons in the new Taskbar. The new design reduces the clutter on the Taskbar.
• You also have the option of shrinking the icons and bringing the labels back if you feel uncomfortable. You can also reorganize the position of these icons in the Taskbar.
• The capabilities of Quick Launch have been included in the Taskbar of Microsoft Windows 7.
• The Live Preview feature of Windows Vista has been improved such that you can simultaneously view the thumbnails of all the running applications just by taking the pointer to an icon.
• A new feature called Jump Lists in Microsoft Windows 7 lets you perform several tasks within an application even if the application is closed. For example, you can open the browser, initiate an InPrivate stealth browsing session or visit any of the eight most frequently visited web pages by using the Jump List of Internet Explorer 8.
• You can view the Windows 7 screen (desktop) with one click, even if you have several open windows, by using the brand new feature called Aero Peek. This feature can be accessed by using the kind of nub at the extreme right edge of the Taskbar. If you hover your pointer to the nub, all windows become transparent, revealing the Windows 7 screen. You can access the applications and icons on the desktop by clicking the nub.

Windows 7 Compatibility
The requirements for the 32-bit version of Microsoft Windows 7 are similar to that of the premium editions of Vista. However, the Windows 7 compatibility requirements for the version built for the 64-bit processor are significantly higher than that for the 32-bit version.

32-bit processor 64-bit processor
Memory (RAM) 1 GB of RAM 2 GB of RAM
HDD free space 16 GB of available disk space 20 GB of available disk space

Apart from the RAM and HDD requirements, you must have a DVD drive (only to install from DVD/CD Media) and DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM driver model 1.0 to install Windows 7 versions.

Security – Windows 7
In Vista, the security – Windows feature, User Account Control (UAC), insistently prompted you to approve the running of applications or change systems settings in order to prevent rogue software from tampering with your PC. In Windows 7, you have more control over this irritating feature. You can alter your UAC settings to notify only when your Windows settings are being changed by software, instead of you.

Windows Upgrade Offers

Various companies are providing their customers with special offers for a Windows upgrade. For example, Acer has announced that customers who purchase a qualifying Windows Vista-based PC from June 26, 2009 to January 31, 2010 would be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 7.

Windows 7 beta is far from being flawless. While some features do not seem fine tuned properly, others can not be utilized to their true capability without additional support from third party applications. However, the overall final shipping Windows 7 versions appear to be the worthy successor of Windows XP that Vista never was.

On the last post I was discussing the fact that a great idea for a blogging website on its own was not enough, on this post I will be discussing how it is possible to use social networking sites to promote your blog. Firstly do you know what the main purpose of a social networking website is? If you are an avid internet user, you likely do. Social networking websites are online communities that make it easier for internet users to meet and communicate with each other. If you are an internet user who enjoys using the internet to meet new people, there is a good chance that you already belong to a social networking website. What about an online blog? Do you have one of them? If you do, do you know that you could use your social networking website to promote your blog?

Promote your blog? Why would you want to do that? Honestly, if you have to ask yourself that question you probably shouldn’t even have one. The whole purpose of a blog is to document your thoughts, views, and opinions on a particular topic, issue, or subject. What good will your blog do if no one reads it. In addition to sharing your thoughts with the rest of the world, did you know that you could also make money from your blog? You can signup for affiliate programs or other programs like Google Adsense. If you are using your blog to make money then you will defiantly want to promote it.

When it comes to promoting blogs, there are many blog owners who decide to let the search engine do the work for them. Search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN use special techniques that reads the content on your website. That content is then used to rank your website with particular keywords. This means that you run a blog on graduating from a university in London, there is a good chance that your blog will appear in searches done on London universities. Although many blogs are successfully ranked in search engines, not all are. That is why you are advised against relying solely on search engines, when it comes to promoting your blog.

As previously mentioned, if you love meeting with or talking to people online, there is a good chance that you belong to a social networking website or community. The individuals that you talk to and that are in your community are likely the individuals that you wish to target. Since most social networking websites work to connect internet users who have the same goals and common interests, there is a good chance that your online friends will enjoy reading your blog. But, before they can read your blog, you have to let them know that it exists.

When it comes to promoting your blog on social networking websites, you have a number of different options. Your first option is to include a link to your blog in your community profile or profile page. This will allow other community members to checkout your blog, only if they wish to do so. The other way is to inform your online friends of your blog through private messages. Once you join a social networking website and create or join a network of friends, you should easily be able to communicate with those friends. Sending each of your friends a private message with information and a link to your blog tends to be more effective than just placing a link in your profile or on your profile page.

Although there is a good chance that you are already a member of a popular social networking website, you may not be. If you are not already a member, but would like to become one, you will need to find a social networking website to join. This can easily be done with a standard internet search. In your search, you will likely find a number of popular network sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, and Orkut. Before becoming a community member at one of these networking sites, you may want to first examine the website to ensure that it is everything that you want it to be.

As you can easily see, there are a number of different ways that you can go about promoting your blog on online social networking websites. You never known, but, in addition to promoting your blog, you may also make new friends along the way.

Twitter marketing is a highly effective way to drive traffic to your content and establish an online presence in the quickest amount of time. Here are 7 “weird” ways to unleash the immense power of Twitter in your small business.

1. Be Vulnerable

To be naked is to be human. When you start sharing your hopes, dreams and fears, you connect with people on a visceral level. Remember, people buy from who you are before they buy what you sell.

2. Tick People Off

There’s a saying that when you try to please everybody you will please nobody. Be opinionated and the people who adore your persuasion will become your fervent followers. Polarization creates sales.

3. Tweet Nonsense

This sounds crazy, but hear me out. People hit up Twitter to chill and catch up with news. People don’t go on Twitter to do business, at least not deliberately. Hit their funny bone and they’ll respond by noticing you.

4. Become Yoda

People are addicted to positive thinking quotes on Twitter. The more motivation quotes you Tweet out, the more you get tweeted. The end result: People think you’re a deep thought leader worth following.

5. Start Dealin’ Cool

Again this bears repeating, people don’t go on Twitter to be sold to. Instead, they go to find breaking news and time-wasting Youtube videos. Here’s the key: Give them what they want (the cool), and they’ll give you what you want (the green). So go on Digg and tweet those links away.

6. Be a Master Asker

Don’t be afraid to ask for a specific action on your Twitter feed, for example a retweet. If you don’t ask for retweets, people will not give you one. If you don’t ask for props, they may not give you one. Ask and you shall receive.

7. Ooze Sex Appeal.

Be as suave with people as you would in real life. Offer compliments, be amicable, crack a joke or two. You’ll be surprised how well this translates in the online space.

And this will help you get as much Twitter traffic! as possible.

BONUS TIP:

8. Raise the Banner. Stand for a cause and your followers will start standing in solidarity with you.
And now there is good news For Business Owners Who Are Almost (But Not Quite) Satisfied With Their Twitter Marketing — And Can’t Figure Out What They’re Doing Wrong: Click Here! to find out more.
